Homemade Baby Blankets

The big gap in posts was because I was busy creating a little person but a few months on I’ve got my hanker back and so it is fitting to recommence with a baby related hanker!

Inspired by the quirky baby blankets I wrote about by Carousel Belle I decided to try to make my own. How hard could it be? Well certainly harder than hitting ‘Add to Basket’, but not too hard. I may have lost a few hours looking at colourful cottons and soft plush fabrics on Plush Addict and hanging around my local fabric shop. But eventually I chose retro lions;

Colourful pigs; and baby blanket pigs

Faux cow hide to match the nursery wallpaper.

I sewed the two pieces of fabric together wrong sides facing leaving a small gap so I could turn them right side out and sewed up the edge. I had a bit of an issue with the plush fabric stretching in the machine so had to redo some of the stitching to correct the wonkiness. They’re certainly not professional quality but I’m pleased with how they turned out and the cow one is a bit of a favourite with baby already.

Plush Addict have gorgeous fabrics and some good value remnant packs to start out with if you fancy having a go.

Quirky Baby Blankets

A couple of friends are pregnant or just had babies so I’ve been looking out for baby presents that are a bit different. These baby blankets by Carousel Belle are gorgeous and not your average run-of-the-mill designs, I had some trouble choosing just one so here are a few of my favourites.

My hands-down favourite is this cowboy blanket. On one side is a soft cow hide design and the other is a print of cowboys rearing up on their horses, chatting on fences and doing other cowboys things.

Know anyone due a baby in the moustache growing month of Movember? This blanket could be the perfect pressie, especially if Daddy-to-be is mustachioed for charity.

This vintage-style tattoo design is really pretty with the purple spotty fleece on the back.

I just love the Frida Kahlo design.

If you like your baby blankets a little more traditional, the Red Riding Hood blanket is sweet in clashy pink and red.

I could carry on showing you these gorgeous blankets all day as there is such a choice, check out the lovely London design that would be great for a Jubilee baby and the slightly macabre Day of the Dead designs.

These are all under £20, which I think is a great price for such unique blankets. Which is your favourite?

P.S. Apologies for the big gap in blog posts recently, life took over a bit!

Buff Babies

A baby in a cute outfit always makes me melt and this picture had the same effect. Look at her little face!

Buff Baby Dumbbell Rattle - Maiden - Culture Label

Relax, the Buff Baby Dumbbell Rattle is made from lightweight plastic. What a great twist on a traditional rattle design.

If you know any exercise-loving new parents this would be a funny little gift for their offspring and if you want to go the whole hog and also get these gym shoe style socks that’s completely up to you.

The rattle is £8 and the socks are £14.95 and both are available from Culture Label.

DIY Baby Tail

Since writing about baby tails I’ve found a handy version for any of you hankering after the mermaid one but unwilling or unable to pay the £70 price tag.

Mermaid Cocoon Knitting Pattern - 4aSong

Order the knitting pattern from Etsy seller 4aSong and knit your own mermaid baby tail cocoon (or ask someone nicely to knit it for you) for $4 plus the cost of the yarn.

4aSong have plenty of other sweet patterns, admittedly not all very practical, there are lots of novelty ones for photo shoots. But this one would keep little legs warm out and about in the buggy or during a daytime nap.

If any of you give this a try I’d love to hear how you get on…

Baby Tails

My Facebook timeline seems to be full of people showing off their babies as fairies, Superman, elves, Christmas puddings, baby Santas, pumpkins and other little cuties. But why not think outside the box? The people at The Miniature Knit Shop have done exactly that with their outfits.

You might get some disapproving looks as you walk down the street with your baby in this Baby Shark Sleeping Bag but I think it’s very funny and very cute.

Less controversial but equally gorgeous is the Knitted Mermaid Tail

All the pieces are handmade and their prices reflect that, the shark is £84 and mermaid tail is £70.

There are some very sweet bird feet booties at £24 which would make a lovely and different new baby gift.

If you want to add a penguin, chicken or parrot hat that is completely up to you.

Live vicariously through your children as long as you can I say, it won’t be long until they learn to talk and can tell you how embarrassing you are. Can I remind you to take lots of photos, they’re perfect ammunition during the teenage years!

You’re Welcome Baby

I’m at the age where lots of friends are having their first babies and really it’s all the excuse I need to look at cute baby pressies. There are so many more gorgeous things available than when I had my little bundle of joy fourteen years ago.

This car seat cover solves the question of whether to put a snowsuit on baby who ends up being a bit squashed in the car seat with all the extra fabric, or tuck a blanket round him which inevitably gets kicked off en route to the car. A fantastic idea in some sweet designs or custom made if coordination is your thing. They are by Sophiemarie for around £30.

Spots and Dots for Tots make some gorgeous baby blankets that can be personalised for baby and feature members of baby’s family, there are several different sizes and styles available from £22.50 up to £75 for this ‘My Family’ design.

Sirbubbadoo’s baby burp cloths are 100% cotton with a design on one side and soft raised dots on the other and could be used as a baby changing mat or dribble cloth. This set of two Matryoshka design burp cloths are £12. They also do bibs and blankets in some lovely unusual designs.

Baby changing bags are often really babyish looking, the designers seem to design them with the baby in mind and forget it’s the parents who actually use them. I think Graham and Green’s stag print changing bag is neither too babyish nor too girly and would probably get the thumbs up from mum, dad and baby.

This sleep thief romper is very sweet and will raise a weary smile from knackered new parents. For the really sleep deprived it is also available as a gift pack with a coordinating sleep mask for mum or dad. Babes and Babies also has a good range of breastfeeding tops and although they’re fairly pricey you can often snap up a bargain in their sales.

Almost makes you want your own doesn’t it?
