Lie Down I Think I Love You

Not a command I generally associate with handbags, that is until I stumbled upon a little shop on a birthday trip to Brighton where I found some gorgeous bags that spoke to me through their labels. However, Lie Down I Think I Love You is just a visitor to Brighton, their products are made in London and their ‘jewel-like’ shop you’ll find in Islington.

The bag that really caught my eye was in buttery soft pale blue re-worked vintage leather, large enough to hold all the useless crap that I insist on carting about with me and topped with a bright vintage scarf. It was less than half price in the sale so it soon became my birthday present.

Lie Down I Think I Love You Bag

Lie Down I Think I Love You have some real beauties of bags, like this Baby Bubble Pop at £255.

Lie Down I Think I Love You, Baby Bubble Pop / Red Patent

The scarves are interchangeable so you can change them to match your mood, the seasons or your outfit and there’s a lovely animation that shows you how to tie the scarf so it looks as good as when you bought it. Choose from a range of vintage scarves, all at £15, my favourite is the one with the cars…

This Hard Heart will make your’s melt, one side is patent and the other has been covered with vintage scarf fabric and will set you back £165.

Lie Down I Think I Love You Hard HeartThey are more than I would normally spend on a bag if I’m honest, but the quality of workmanship is really good and I think they’re very unique with their vintage elements. Look out for their sales with most things reduced to 50% of the original price.

Saddlebags

For my Cycletta ride on Sunday I have a list of things I want to take with me and want a bag that I can hang on my bike rather than on my back. I never thought I’d want more saddlebags, I’ve carried a pair on my hips since I reached adulthood. But with the exercise I’ve done over the last six months hopefully I can start to minimise my physical ones and just have them on my bike.

I found them surprisingly expensive and a lot are pretty ugly too, but here is a beautiful one to start with.

Chritina Hamilton Bike Bag

Designed by trained saddler Christina Hamilton who qualified from the London College of Fashion earlier this year, this stunning design is from her final project. I am hankering after one so much. Christina won the Leathersellers’ Company Business Start Up Award and is setting up her own business so if anyone knows when and where they are available to buy, please let me know!

So until I can buy one of those, here are some other nice-looking ones.

This 1940s style pannier from Cyclechic looks just as good off the bike as on. It’s made from water-resistant woven pine and is £55.

Bobbin Bicycle Pannier - Cyclechic

This pannier inspired by vintage boat bags is so enormous I bet it would hold everything you could ever need. It also has a padlock so you can secure it to your bike. It converts to a shoulder bag and is made from waxed canvas in three colourways, at £44.99 it is also from Cyclechic.

Linus Sac pannier Beige - Cyclechic

The Liv Classic Large Handlebar Bag is made by bike brand Giant. It fits on the front under the handlebars which means you can keep an eye on it when you’re riding through town and it transfers to a handbag with a shoulder strap for when you’re on foot. I’m assuming it isn’t waterproof though as it comes with a raincover. The retail price is £44.99 but Wheelies are selling it for £40.49. It also comes in a dark green canvas with dark brown artificial leather trim and in a medium size.

Finally this shiny red handlebar bag from Cyclodelic is waterproof and coverts to a nice little clutch bag. It is handmade in London and costs £69.

I was tempted by a basket but I think they’re too twee even for me.

Tea Cosy Handbags

Tea cosy handbags. Now that’s not a phrase you hear everyday is it?

Hands up who else can remember this ginger cat tea cosy? My love of ginger cats, the memory of my granny’s tea cosy like this and the fact that it has been made into a handbag make this hankering gold! I love its quirkiness.

Maybe you like this vintage patchwork tea cosy handbag more?

Vintage Tea Cosy Handbag - uoldbag! The contrast back and lining make this really interesting and special. I love this almost as much.

Designed by U Old Bag! They are both currently available at a reduced price of £65 from Culture Label. There are also some cracking upcycled vintage suitcases and vanity cases.

Which would you wear?

Bag of Sunshine

The hope hanging in the air at this time of year and this beautiful sunshine we’re having has me hankering for bright colours.

Since my bag insult I finally bought a springy green leather bag but I’ve been kicking myself ever since I saw this gorgeous sunshine yellow bag from H&M. It’s such a lovely colour and is so soft.

H&M - Yellow Bag

You can get it in bronze or beige but I think this colour is the winner by miles. It’s faux leather which explains the disparity between its softness and its price of £24.99.

Is it just me or are you all adorning yourselves with colour now spring has arrived?

Below Stairs Of Hungerford

Have you visited Below Stairs of Hungerford? I found it yesterday and have already lost quite a few hours looking through all their stuff. It is an Aladdin’s Cave of amazing finds.

This General Post Office leather Gladstone bag is definitely my favourite item for four reasons. Firstly, it is unused, secondly it has G.P.O on the side, thirdly it is £200 & finally it is just beautiful.

Unused Leather Gladstone Bag L17 - Below Stairs of Hungerford

I think this 1900/1920s letter rack is wonderful, in fact I’d like it in our hallway. Our house was built in 1926 so it would fit right in. It’s £75.

There are so many jelly, ice and entrée moulds on this site it is fantastic, there’s even one in the shape of a tongue! They are mainly copper so are pretty pricey with some of the more ornate ones for sale at around £300. This tiny unused teardrop entrée mould is just gorgeous and as it’s small, so is its price tag of £16.

The kitchenalia section is very impressive with gadgets from coffee grinders to whisks to apple peelers, coveted items as copper saucepans and even a 1940s electric oven and a recipe book from the same era.

Need a new washing machine? What about the 1928 ‘Wonder Washer’? So much nicer looking than our white goods, if not as practical.

There’s a great range of old enamel signs and advertising materials, one that had me hankering was this pre-war copper ashtray from the hotel where my husband and I spent our wedding night.

I could show you more and more but go on over and have a browse, Below Stairs of Hungerford have an amazing range of quirky pieces. I really enjoyed looking through the more unusual sections such as the police equipment, medical items and old postboxes. I think I may have to make time to go and have a look in person at their shop in Berkshire.

What is your favourite item?

Faux Paper Bags

During half-term my daughter and I had a day out together, I put my black bag across me as usual only to be told on the train that it was a “trying-to-be-trendy-but-failing-mum-bag”. I didn’t think it was that bad. But now I come to think of it my husband has also suggested that I treat myself to a new bag a few times recently…. Oh (sound of penny dropping), the bag is awful.

On my hunt for a less awful handbag, I saw these leather bags by Natthakur London that are masquerading as paper and plastic bags, they’re not handbags but they are so lovely. This leather striped grocery bag looks just like the ones from my corner shop but it won’t split as you walk down the road and it’s far nicer. It’s £140 and also available in red.

A ‘paper’ bag that will never go soggy in the rain, available in brown or white leather at £130. The hand printed fabric lining has a repeat of the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ man. Genius.

Leather Brown Paperbag by Natthakur London

The mini leather paper bag is an American style grocery bag that I think is my favourite of the two faux paper styles, it also has the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ lining and is £65.

These leather penny sweet bags are gorgeous, £28 for the purse and £75 for the clutch bag. The purse also comes in pink, blue, orange and yellow just like in the newsagents.

Natthakur London have loads more gorgeous leather purses, cuffs and wallets in their shop, have a look – it really is like browsing in a sweet shop.

Nice Hues of Red, White & Blue

I don’t know if it’s because of the Queen’s jubilee later in the year but I’m really drawn to red, white and blue at the moment so when I saw this scalloped dress from Oasis I was hankering.

Scallop 2 in 1 Dress - Oasis

I like the blocks of colour making it look like separates and the pretty scalloped edge of the skirt. At £50 I think it’s not a bad price although I might have to buy this striped clutch bag by Layla Copeland to go with it which would nearly double the cost.

Hmmm, what shoes though?

Wear Your Heart On Your Clutch

I saw this red leather Heart & Soul clutch when I was looking online for a Valentine card and promptly started hankering. Farrago Bags personalise their bags with initialed key-rings which adds a really nice touch, especially for a present.

Despite my best efforts to the contrary we don’t really ‘do’ Valentine’s day in our house (every day is Valentine’s day!) but I might keep my fingers crossed anyway, or you know, just buy it for myself…

It’s quite small but look how much it can hold!

It’s just under £60 including shipping and is a limited edition design for Valentine’s day. It ships from Hungary so if you’re ordering one make sure you leave enough time.

I’m thinking black dress, red shoes and red lipstick but then I am a little matchy-matchy. What outfit would you wear it with?
