Butterfly Kimono

I was at my friend’s house recently and saw a beautiful dusky pink embroidered satin fabric folded neatly on her kitchen side that made me stop whatever I was yapping about and exclaim “I love that!”. My friend unfolded this beautiful kimono in its full glory and I’ve hankered after it ever since.

Based on a 1920s Japanese design, Lunn Antiques have brought it back to life.

I’m very lucky that my generous friend has satisfied my hanker and given me one as a gift! I just need some fluffy pink mules to set it off with now.

Chapatis With a Vintage Touch

My mother-in-law is staying with us at the moment, there’ll be no mother-in-law jokes on here though as she’s lovely. She also makes a mean curry and amazing chapatis. I’m going to see if she’ll share her recipe with me, firstly because I love eating chapatis and secondly, so I can use one of these vintage chapati boards to roll them out on.

Rockett St George - Vintage Chapati Boards

Aren’t they beautiful? Especially the more decorative one, second from the top. The dents and grooves add to their charm and I bet they feel all lovely and warm and smooth. You can get one from Rockett St. George from £25.

If I succeed in getting  my hands on the recipe I’ll post it here next week and if I don’t, I may get one of these boards anyway and use it as a pot stand.

Desirable Drapery

The new range of fabrics by Andrew Martin at Rockett St George has me hankering. They’re really unusual and I think would like really striking on a bed head, ottoman or cushions.

I love playing cards but as it’s one of the few games I can win at, it’s difficult to stop me once I’ve started. This croupier fabric would cheer me up when no-one will play cards with me.

This vintage style comic book fabric is all about what young ladies want to be when they grow up, I think I wanted to be at least four of them in my younger days…

Andrew Martin I Want To Be 'Vintage Comic' Fabric - Rockett St George

The Naughty Nurse vintage style comic book fabric is probably not one for your kid’s room, from the photos I can’t make out the text but the design is great, if a little raunchy.

All three fabrics are 133cm wide and sold in 1 metre lengths at £59.50 per metre.

Red & White Vintage Threads

Yesterday after an unsuccessful trawl around my local shopping centre I was feeling disheartened. It would seem I’m in-between sizes as everything I tried was either too small or too big, the one dress that fitted was bright orange and I could foresee taunts involving Tango from my nearest and dearest.

When a sales assistant came and asked me if I was ok, as I’d been there “an awfully long time”, I decided it was time to head home. On my drive back I passed Mela Mela Vintage and popped in. They’ve got such a beautiful range of vintage clothes and although it’s always pot luck what sizes there are, they have some gorgeous stock.

First on my list of hankers is this red and white long 1950s sundress.

Such a beautiful cut that frankly left everything I’d seen on the high street in the shade and at £130 it’s a lot less than many dresses on the high street. At first I thought the print was of teacups with steam coming out but on closer inspection I saw they were actually fountains.

Although I loved it, I didn’t get it as I just don’t wear long dresses and after toying with the idea of getting it altered to be shorter, I decided that would be an awful waste of such beautiful material.

Also in red and white was this stunning 1950s crepe dress with embroidery and cut away detail. You’d have to wear a slip underneath this but a blue or yellow one would look great, or even a bright clashing pink.

At £175 it is a little more, but it’s in such good condition and still has the original belt.

I left with this plastic bunting style necklace from the 60s/70s which I picked from a lovely display of red, white and blue jewellery in one of the many display cabinets.

At £25 it put a smile on my face.

Tea Cosy Handbags

Tea cosy handbags. Now that’s not a phrase you hear everyday is it?

Hands up who else can remember this ginger cat tea cosy? My love of ginger cats, the memory of my granny’s tea cosy like this and the fact that it has been made into a handbag make this hankering gold! I love its quirkiness.

Maybe you like this vintage patchwork tea cosy handbag more?

Junk Bear

Today I came across Junk Bear and his ‘junkdar’ and I’m so glad I did.

Not only was my mood brightened by the Jaffa juicer‘s description (designed to be sung to ‘I Like To Move It’), but I found these beautiful and sexy 1950s French glass mugs.

French Blue Cups - Junk Bear

Aren’t they gorgeous? The set of six is just £15.

There’s a whole section of old cameras for you to choose from including a Super 8 camera and a camera with bellows. A portable record player for vinyl lovers, plus a toys and games section. I’ve never seen a Cress Board before, but I’m hankering after one now and thinking of all the messages I could leave on it.

Cressboard-Junk Bear

Junk Bear is full of wonderfully quirky pieces but to be honest I’m not sure which you’ll like best, the items for sale or the descriptions of Junk Bear dating flapper girls and wrestling crocodiles. I think regular visits will be needed to keep my mood lifted.

Now the song is in all our heads, let’s just go with it. All together now, “Physi-cally fit, physi-cally fit…”

Sideboard Splendour

Zoe from Conversation Pieces tweeted a picture of her gorgeous colourful vintage sideboard a couple of weeks ago and since then I’ve not been able to get sideboards out of my head. Here’s some that I’m hankering after.

Chloe’s rounded edges and studded surface keep coming to my mind. Isn’t she beautiful? She wouldn’t work in our house at all, which means I won’t get to stroke her but it is good for our bank balance. From Love Your Home For Less for £595.

Chloe Metal Sideboard - Love Your Home For Less

With its straight lines and corners Made’s Vernay cabinet is very different to Chloë, I definitely prefer the multi-coloured version but if it would clash with your decor the oak version is still gorgeous and fifty quid cheaper at £299.

This 1960s vintage English teak sideboard from Vintage Retro looks in such good condition and is really lovely looking with a price to match at £190. I love the handles.

Vintage Retro have another 60s sideboard that’s 2 metres wide and possibly Swedish in heritage, it’s £130 as it has a water damaged top but I reckon that could be dealt with by covering with some nice wallpaper or fabric and adding a glass top. What do you think?

A Melange of Maps

I bought my husband these vintage map cufflinks with the location of where we got married on one cufflink and where we honeymooned on the other, as a six-month wedding anniversary present (sickly newly weds!). Since then I’ve been hankering after some map things for our home.

Philippa Stanton makes these beautiful vintage map lamps. Choose from Isle of Wight & Solent, Brighton, Rochester & Chatham or various areas of London for around £44 including the base or ask for a bespoke lamp with the area of your choice.

These coasters and placemats by Scarlett Willow Ltd. can be personalised with the postcode of your choice in the centre and as an older or more modern style map. They start at £40 for a set of four coasters. A nice idea for a house-warming present.

I love this blanket box from Flutterbug Interiors, the UK map decoupage design includes the interior too. This size is £89 or a smaller size is £55.

The Origin of the Unit artwork by Terror Dome is really gorgeous, each member of the family is made from a map of where they spent their childhood. The family of four version is £57 and comes framed in a shadow box. It can be personalised further based on number of family members and what mix of girls and boys are in the family.

I’ve always hankered after a dressmaker’s dummy and Grace & Favour Homes do a lovely range. With most of them starting at £175 they’re not cheap, but this decoupaged London map mannequin is really stunning.

Pancakes & Mrs Pepperpot

Pancake Day always makes me think of the Mrs Pepperpot books from my childhood and how she managed to make her and her husband 30 pancakes for dinner when she was the size of a pepperpot.

As I whisk the batter I remember the quirky illustrations by Bjorn Berg and the flyaway wisps of hair that had escaped from Mrs Pepperpot’s bun. My favourite bit was when her cat licked the plates clean so she didn’t fall in a sink of washing-up water. I’m still not sure why her husband didn’t help her?

Mrs Pepperpot's Busy Day-Alf Proysen

I’ll let my husband wash-up the pancake pans tonight after I’ve finished making them as the cats’ mouths are still a little mousey from the little present they brought in earlier.

If you’re hankering after a copy of Mrs Pepperpot’s Busy Day there are some copies on Amazon with the 70s/80s cover from a few pence.

Suitcase Shelves

I was online looking for shelves and I stumbled across these beautiful vintage suitcase shelves by Quirks By Annie. I think they’re awesome.

Vintage Suitacase Shelves by Quirks by Annie

They are $100 which I think is quite reasonable but unfortunately for me they are all the way in California. Shipping to the UK is £35 and if a customs charge is applicable it could get expensive. I’m not that handy but I’m hankering after them, I wonder how hard it could be to make some?

If you’re wondering too, there’s quite a few tutorials online but I thought this one looked the most easy to follow.
