Well Wishes

After the subject of wishes yesterday I realised I left out a big wish tradition, but this Wishbone Card from Present & Correct reminded me.

I don’t know how it slipped my mind, it was such a big wish producer when I was little. My Granny would reward me with pulling the wishbone if I helped clear the plates from the table and I’m sure she knew which end to give me as I always seemed to get the wish.

Wishbone Card - Present & Correct

There is space for you and someone else to write your wishes on the back and the card is perforated so it can be split down the middle. Even better than a real wishbone it seems both of you get your wishes – result!

This card could be used for loads of events – good luck card, birth of a baby. But I think my favourite would be as an alternative to a wedding wishing tree or guest book, collect up well wishes from all your guests on these wishbone cards instead.

What would you use them for?

Baby Tails

My Facebook timeline seems to be full of people showing off their babies as fairies, Superman, elves, Christmas puddings, baby Santas, pumpkins and other little cuties. But why not think outside the box? The people at The Miniature Knit Shop have done exactly that with their outfits.

You might get some disapproving looks as you walk down the street with your baby in this Baby Shark Sleeping Bag but I think it’s very funny and very cute.

Less controversial but equally gorgeous is the Knitted Mermaid Tail

Handmade Knitted Mermaid Tail Baby Costume - The Miniature Knit Shop

All the pieces are handmade and their prices reflect that, the shark is £84 and mermaid tail is £70.

There are some very sweet bird feet booties at £24 which would make a lovely and different new baby gift.

If you want to add a penguin, chicken or parrot hat that is completely up to you.

Live vicariously through your children as long as you can I say, it won’t be long until they learn to talk and can tell you how embarrassing you are. Can I remind you to take lots of photos, they’re perfect ammunition during the teenage years!

The Dandelight

When I was a child I was always hankering for wishes.

Say something at the same time? Make a wish! Walk underneath a train bridge when a train is going over? Link little fingers and make a wish! Blow out birthday candles? Make a wish!

Eyelash falls out? Blow it away and make a wish! See a dandelion head? Blow the seeds free and make a wish!

PLEASE don’t blow on this dandelion.

The Dandelight - Rockett St George

Each of these real dandelion seeds is precisely stuck to an LED light by hand to make The Dandelight.

The realistic quality is beautifully countered by the visible 9V battery that powers the light which I think makes it all the more intriguing.

It is £85 from Rockett St George, but if you’re going to make the investment can I recommend paying the extra £36 for the dome just in case any one sneezes near it!

Faux Paper Bags

During half-term my daughter and I had a day out together, I put my black bag across me as usual only to be told on the train that it was a “trying-to-be-trendy-but-failing-mum-bag”. I didn’t think it was that bad. But now I come to think of it my husband has also suggested that I treat myself to a new bag a few times recently…. Oh (sound of penny dropping), the bag is awful.

On my hunt for a less awful handbag, I saw these leather bags by Natthakur London that are masquerading as paper and plastic bags, they’re not handbags but they are so lovely. This leather striped grocery bag looks just like the ones from my corner shop but it won’t split as you walk down the road and it’s far nicer. It’s £140 and also available in red.

A ‘paper’ bag that will never go soggy in the rain, available in brown or white leather at £130. The hand printed fabric lining has a repeat of the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ man. Genius.

Leather Brown Paperbag by Natthakur London

The mini leather paper bag is an American style grocery bag that I think is my favourite of the two faux paper styles, it also has the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ lining and is £65.

These leather penny sweet bags are gorgeous, £28 for the purse and £75 for the clutch bag. The purse also comes in pink, blue, orange and yellow just like in the newsagents.

Natthakur London have loads more gorgeous leather purses, cuffs and wallets in their shop, have a look – it really is like browsing in a sweet shop.

Picture Perfect Necklaces

Iluxo have used cameras as the inspiration for these cute necklaces, the tops slide off but instead of film inside they are hollow so you can use them as lockets to store a little photo or object. Made from unvarnished bamboo the designs have been etched and cut using a laser.

I’m really hankering after this Polaroid SX-70 inspired camera necklace.

This Leica M3 Camera Locket Necklace is so detailed.

Or maybe you prefer this Rolleiflex Camera Locket Necklace?

All come with a gold or silver-plated necklace for $35 and delivery from San Francisco to the UK is a little under £4.

What would you put in it?

Suitcase Shelves

I was online looking for shelves and I stumbled across these beautiful vintage suitcase shelves by Quirks By Annie. I think they’re awesome.

Vintage Suitacase Shelves by Quirks by Annie

They are $100 which I think is quite reasonable but unfortunately for me they are all the way in California. Shipping to the UK is £35 and if a customs charge is applicable it could get expensive. I’m not that handy but I’m hankering after them, I wonder how hard it could be to make some?

If you’re wondering too, there’s quite a few tutorials online but I thought this one looked the most easy to follow.

Paper, Scissors, Rock Necklace

Oh the hours I’ve whiled away playing ‘Paper, Scissors, Rock’ with my brother when we were young to end disputes and then my daughter when she was little to kill time when we were waiting for pretty much anything to happen. I’ve racked up hours and hours on this game. The only game to come anywhere close, in my opinion, is ‘Thumb Wars’ but that’s a subject all of its own…

So when I saw this ‘Paper, Scissors, Rock’ necklace by Brighton jewellery designers Rock Cakes it brought back many happy memories for me.

Paper Scissors Rock Necklace by Rockcakes

There are some pretty special things about this necklace. First things first, the rock is a 4ct DIAMOND. A rough diamond that you can ask for in various sizes and colours. Secondly, the scissors actually open and close. That paperclip isn’t from Ryman’s either, it is sterling silver. The whole thing is silver and handmade and yours for £206.

Want to nudge any partners who’ve forgotten it’s Valentine’s Day next week?

Have a look at the rest of Rock Cakes jewellery, you can get lovely things from £3. I particularly like the anatomical heart and the wooden bicycle brooches. What about you?

Hot Dogs and Hot Mogs

When you’re feeling a bit cold and sorry for yourself and a little cat snuggles into your lap the world is a happy place. My cats are real lap-cats but as is typical of cats, only on their terms. One of them in particular has an obsession with sitting on the back of the sofa or on my pillow trying to eat my hair. I have no idea why, I assure you I do wash it.

I’m sure Fudge would just sit there and keep me warm. But that’s because he’s a Hot Mog filled with wheat and lavender and isn’t overcome by strange hair-related desires. He also won’t mind being put in the microwave to warm him up, whereas I’m told that’s a real no-no with normal cats.

I’m quite scared of dogs but I could cope with one of these Hot Dogs sitting on me. You can choose from Rufus the handsome dachshund,

Daisy the good bulldog,

Bernie the willful greyhound,

Prince the charming chihuahua or Jack the ungainly Airedale.

These radiating creatures are designed and made by Emma Henderson, her company Showpony make beautiful and quirky products from a studio in the East End of Glasgow. Their screenprinting workshops look fun, if I didn’t live 400 miles away I’d definitely try to attend one.

Which Hot Dog or Hot Mog is your favourite?

The Snow Lounge

There’s no sign that our little flurry of snow happened where I live, except for the lone snowman standing confusingly in our garden. It seemed over a little to quickly for my liking. Are you hankering after the snow? If so, you might consider bringing the snow indoors with this Sled Coffee Table & Snow White Rug by Duffy London.

Sled Coffee Table and Snow White Rug by Duffy London

The sled is walnut and birch plywood and with the grooves in the deep snowy rug it could have just slid in from outside. It is £2495 from Duffy London but you can get it for almost a thousand pounds less from Hidden Art Shop. Either way it’s a lot of money for something that would probably only work in winter with log cabin style decor but I’m still hankering…

What do you think of it?

If At First You Do Not See

I love a design that isn’t what it first appears.

Glass Plastic Bag - Rockett St George

At first glance you see a plastic bag full apricots, but when you look again you see it’s made from glass. This Glass Plastic Bag Bowl would make me smile every single time I walked past it. Yes, I am easily pleased. At £15 you can be too.

Samantha Robinson has made these porcelain coffee cups look exactly like party paper cups. I love the detailing on these.

Forest Clearing have taken a really simple thing and made it beautiful with their Porcelain Berry Basket.
