GX2 Homegrown

GX2 Homegrown is one of the designers I’ve featured most on The Hankerer. I’m not on commission, I just love her clever designs and her new card designs are another hit with me.

Raven Card, Scrawl Your Own Greeting - GX2 Homegrown

Instead of a small sticker reading ‘Blank For Your Greeting’, that message is integrated into the design. A beautiful black raven is holding in his beak a banner for you to ‘scrawl your own greeting’ on. This card is £2.

This colourful hand sewn personalised bunting card is simple but really special. It’s £3.50.

I am so glad I’m connected to you. Doesn’t this just encompass how you feel about some people? Two hearts are joined together by hand stitched waxed linen. It’s available in three different colour combinations for £2.

GX2 doesn’t just do cards, her artwork is breathtaking. Take a look at her 1950s inspired Burlesque print entitled ‘Slip n’ Slide n’ Melt Beside Me’.

A gorgeous piece of art for £5. I love it.

What Really Happens After Dark?

Ever wondered what really goes on after dark when most people are tucked up in bed dreaming peacefully? The Best Part has some prints that show you exactly that. In single pieces of art The Best Part have combined two layers of phosphorescent inks to show a peaceful daytime scene and a glow in the dark scene of zombies, crime and general seediness.

New York in the daytime shows a bookstore, a mother walking with a pram in the park, subway trains and what looks like the freak show and ferris wheel at Coney Island.

New York Day & Night - The Best Part

But when you turn out the lights you see Batman scaling a skyscraper, a mother being held-up at gunpoint, an adult bookstore, graffiti covering the subway, a gun sinking into the water at Coney Island, and a police officer shooting at zombies.

In contrast to San Francisco’s calm daytime scene, glowing in the dark are search helicopters, massage parlour, pirates, people lurking under the Golden Gate Bridge and what the seagull has actually eaten. I love the way the sun turns into the moon on this one.

San Francisco Day & Night - The Best Part

Both prints are $50 and are limited edition, New York is a set of 75 and San Francisco is a set of 50. I’m hankering after them both but can’t wait to see the new Day & Night varieties that are apparently coming soon.

P-P-P-Pick Up A Penguin Print

This morning I finally got around to framing and hanging my Mr Penguin With Balloons print by Showler & Showler that I got for Christmas.

Mr Penguin With Balloons - Showler & Showler

I think it’s really meant for children but I thought it would go nicely in our cow bedroom, that one day might be for a little person and in the meantime is a spare bedroom/home office. Mr Penguin comes in three sizes from £12.99 and on postcards from £1.

I chose a gloss black wooden picture frame and paired it with a snow-white mount with black core from Eze Frame that I thought would frame the print nicely and accentuate the bright colours.

Showler & Showler have a fantastic collection of bright and colourful prints and postcards suitable for kids and big kids alike. I particularly like their crayon print. They’ve just launched their new website and print range and to celebrate have a 20% off discount code to use when you buy prints, so pop over to their website for a pop of colour.

What do you think of Mr Penguin? Too kiddie or just adult enough?

My Motto From NYC

Last time I went to New York was almost three years ago. This Motto poster I saw in Reed Space really struck a chord with me. It was just what I needed to see, at exactly the right moment, to help me start doing things a bit differently and break through some mistakes I kept making.

Motto - Staple X Cole Winston Moss

Motto was the result of a collaboration between C. W. Moss and Staple Design based on a phrase from founder Jeff Staple. It was the first poster Staples Design did.

“If you’re just doing things in the moment & not reflecting on how you could do them better, it’s very unlikely you’ll improve.

The takeaway!

Focus on technique, even during playtime. Mindless participation is not enough. Knowing you’re doing something wrong isn’t the same as doing it right. Once you’ve isolated problem areas, think about how you can avoid making mistakes. Performance gains come by recognizing flaws you’d like to pretend don’t exist.” Jeff Staple

I love the quote and the way Moss brings it to life with his illustration is genius. I’m so pleased that I bought this when I did as it doesn’t look like it’s available to buy anymore. But there’s so much interesting stuff over at Staple Design and Moss’s website and plenty to hanker after in the Reed Space Online Shop that I’m sure you’ll find your own inspiration.

Pancake Prompts

This week is going to be great. How could it not be? It has pancakes in it.

I look forward to Shrove Tuesday for about three weeks but despite my anticipation I always end up scrabbling around for a recipe on Pancake Day. Along with many other things, I can’t keep it in my head. When I was little my mum had a frying pan with a pancake recipe printed on the bottom of it, although if you get one you may want to make a mental note not to turn it over to check a quantity once you’ve started heating the oil. I think I may have done that. What? That’s how you learn things.

A far nicer recipe prompt is this recipe print for Kath’s Go Faster Pancakes by Etsy seller Kate Sutton.

Pancake Recipe Print - Kate Sutton

I love the illustrations, the egg’s happy face and the mustachioed electric mixer more than make up for the rogue apostrophe in the title. The recipe looks good too, I’ve never added a whisked egg white but I’ll bet that makes for some gorgeous and fluffy pancakes. Having this print up in my kitchen all year round would definitely increase my pancake making and therefore my happiness.

Kath’s Go Faster Pancake recipe recommends serving with maple syrup and fruit but my favourite is the simple yet heavenly lemon and sugar combo. How do you like yours?

Valentine’s Day Presents

Are you celebrating Valentine’s day next week?

You could start the day using a heart-shaped frying pan to make fried eggs or pancakes for the love of your life.

Tell your love why you love them every day by changing the message on this personalised framed print.

These Love Letter Cookies are so sweet and although it might be a bit late for shipping from the US to here in the UK you could try making your own version.

Rob Ryan would make my Valentine’s day complete and this beautiful All Of The Thoughts print is available in three versions (man/man, woman/woman or man/woman) for whoever floats your boat.

All Of The Thoughts - Rob RyanThis is very much my attitude to love – say you love me and you will hear every random thought in my head and is the cause of many of my husband’s sighs.

Joyless in January

Today I am feeling a bit bleurgh.

With all the exercise I’ve been doing recently I should be bouncing off the walls with happy endorphins but I just feel knackered, teary, beaten-up, irritable and generally rubbish. I would like to wrap myself up in this ‘Hold Me’ and ‘I’m Fragile’ tape, so people know what to do with this breakable version of me.

I would like someone to present me with this print to make me smile. That might make my irritability lessen.

Maybe if I went to sleep in this yellow blanket its sunshine would permeate me.

I’m hankering to make a nest on the sofa in this quilt

…and watch John Hughes films.

That always makes me feel better.
