Christening Gifts

At the weekend we went to a christening. It was a lovely day full of pregnant ladies, babies and dressed up adults. The sun came out just in time for everyone’s arrival at the church and we spent the party afterwards on the terrace sipping Prosecco with kids frolicking round the garden.

I ummed and ahhed for ages over what to get as a gift but finally decided on this French 1930s mother of pearl rosary.

French 1930s Rosary

The silver was a little tarnished when it arrived from France but with some silver dip and a little elbow grease it came up much shinier than in this photo. I thought as it was old and unusual they may not get anything similar as a gift. I hope it will rise in value as the little one gets older so when she’s older she can trade it in for something that she likes. If you like it, this rosary is quite similar in style but from the fifties.

After I bought it of course, I kept hankering after other christening gifts that could also have been perfect. This silver money bear was one of them, he’s £10 from Three Jelly Moulds and a Wardrobe. Isn’t he sweet?

I also really like this Noah’s Ark pendant, the top opens to reveal tiny pairs of silver animals inside. It’s £35 from Lullaby Blue. There is an owl and pussy cat version too.

Finally, this clever little bracelet spells out god-daughter in morse code. It’s £69 from Between You & I. Although if you’re not a godparent you can get it personalised to whatever message you like.

Marathon Medals

I’m sure we all know someone who is running a 5k, 10k, half-marathon or marathon this year, especially with the Virgin London Marathon almost a week away. I saw these necklaces by The Run Home and thought they were a fantastic way of congratulating a runner on their achievements.

Look at this gun-metal 26.2 necklace with cute running shoe charm.

Run 26.2 - The Run Home

For the person you know who loves to run, this sterling silver necklace might be perfect.

The nervous runner could be lifted by this Believe in the Marathon sterling silver necklace to wear for their race.

The New York City Marathon is on 4th November this year & this Big Apple necklace to celebrate it is fabulous. You can customise your necklace to celebrate your own race.

I’d need this No Excuses Runner Girl necklace to keep my training up I think, as I’m ever the procrastinator.

There are so many charms and pendants to choose from and you can mix, match and customise until you have one perfect for the runner, swimmer or triathlete in your life. Prices range from $3.50 for a pendant to $41 for a sterling silver necklace with four charms.

I’m not a natural runner, the most I can do comfortably is 10K and although I did once apply for the London Marathon I was secretly relieved when I didn’t get a place, but it would be amazing to run one day. If you need some running inspiration take a visit to Bangs & a Bun or Nicole is Better.

Paper, Scissors, Rock Necklace

Oh the hours I’ve whiled away playing ‘Paper, Scissors, Rock’ with my brother when we were young to end disputes and then my daughter when she was little to kill time when we were waiting for pretty much anything to happen. I’ve racked up hours and hours on this game. The only game to come anywhere close, in my opinion, is ‘Thumb Wars’ but that’s a subject all of its own…

So when I saw this ‘Paper, Scissors, Rock’ necklace by Brighton jewellery designers Rock Cakes it brought back many happy memories for me.

Paper Scissors Rock Necklace by Rockcakes

There are some pretty special things about this necklace. First things first, the rock is a 4ct DIAMOND. A rough diamond that you can ask for in various sizes and colours. Secondly, the scissors actually open and close. That paperclip isn’t from Ryman’s either, it is sterling silver. The whole thing is silver and handmade and yours for £206.

Want to nudge any partners who’ve forgotten it’s Valentine’s Day next week?

Have a look at the rest of Rock Cakes jewellery, you can get lovely things from £3. I particularly like the anatomical heart and the wooden bicycle brooches. What about you?

Rainbow Styling

I’ve mentioned Mixko before and their dreamy cloud necklace but the item that first drew me to their Etsy shop was this unique and smile inducing Here Comes the Sun necklace.

Here Comes the Sun necklace - Mixko

I wasn’t sure if in the flesh the quirky plastic dove would look tacky and the delicate ribbon rainbow too delicate. But when it arrived (very speedily) the classy packaging reassured me that Mixko know design. Their necklace is delicate and light but very well made, the dove elegantly flies across your neck and the ribbons sit perfectly one underneath the other. The final piece of wonderful design is the ‘last drop of rain’, a single blue Czech crystal bead that hangs down the back of your neck from the clasp.

This necklace brings a splash of colour and character when worn and has been admired by everyone I’ve seen when I’ve worn it, even my goth daughter!

When I ordered this it was supposed to be a present but I guiltily kept it for myself. I’ll have to order another for the original recipient, but at less than £20 it’s affordable and as Mixko give 20% of their profits to victims of the Japanese earthquake I can feel that by nicking someone else’s present, I am in fact doing good.
